My name is Mate Ternyik, I'm a colourist based in Budapest, Hungary. I graduated from the University of York with a degree in Film and TV Production, and started working in post-production in London, UK, first at Unit and later at The Mill.
From 2017, I worked as a colourist at the Hungarian Film Lab, where I had the chance to gain experience in the complete gamut of analogue and digital image workflows.
As freelancer from 2019, I initially worked mainly on long-form TV for Hungarian broadcasters, and later for HBO Max. Since 2021 I finished over a dozen feature films.
I designed and tested hybrid workflows that included recording digitally captured images to film for complex film emulation, supervised analogue film print creation, designed and built a bespoke 35mm and medium format scanning solution, and got involved with every stage of image acquisition and presentation in both digital and analogue realms.
I've enjoyed working with cinematographers and directors on bringing their cohesive visions to life from pre-production to the finished grade. My strong technological orientation, as well as my earlier background in working as part of camera teams are especially important to me in when tackling complex challenges of look development.
I love exploring and pushing the boundries of all that a final grade can do. Powerful cinematic visions also often draw me to short films, music videos, and documentaries.
Films I graded have been selected into festivals such as Venice, Berlin, Sundance, Chicago, Tallinn and more, many winning prestigious awards, such as Best Film at Venice in 2023 by EXPLANATION FOR EVERYTHING in the Orizzonti section.
